Invitation for pre-qualification of contractors for the construction works in Contract package TNRSP 01 under Tamil Nadu Road Sector Project

The Government of India intends to apply for a loan from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) towards the cost of widening, strengthening and improving the state Highways in Tamil Nadu, and it further intends to apply part of the proceeds of this loan to payments under the contracts for Tamil Nadu Road Sector Project Contract Package TNRSP 01 for Widening and Strengthening of State Highways in Tamil Nadu. The Superintending Engineer (H), Tamil Nadu Road Sector Project intends to pre-qualify contractors / firms for this project comprising of Widening and Strengthening and construction of new bypasses to a total length of about 420 km of State Highways to two lane standards in one Contract Package to be completed in 42 months. It is expected that invitations to bid will be made in September 2001.

Prequalification will be conducted through pre-qualification procedures specified in the World Bank Guidelines: Procurement under IBRD Loans and IDA credits, January 1995 (revised January and August 1996, September 1997 and January 1999 ), and is open to all bidders from eligible source countries, as defined in the guidelines.

| 3. | Interested eligible bidders may obtain further information from and inspect the pre-qualification documents at the office of the Superintending Engineer (H), Tamil Nadu Road Sector Project, 76/2, Sardar Patel Road, Highways Complex, Guindy,Chennai-600 025 (address below) from 1000 Hours to 1700 Hours on or after May 16,2001.

| 4. | A complete set of pre-qualification documents in English may be purchased by interested bidders on the submission of a written application to the address below and upon payment of a nonrefundable fee of Rs 5,625 or US$ 125 .There is an additional fee for document sent by post of Rs. 500 in India and Rs.2,250 or US$ 50 for outside India. The payment shall be by nonrefundable crossed demand draft drawn in favour of the Divisional Engineer, Tamil Nadu Road Sector Project, Chennai - 25 payable on any scheduled bank at Chennai.

| 5. | The applicant may collect the documents in person or through (an) authorized agent(s). The Superintending Engineer (H), will promptly dispatch the documents by registered airmail/Courier but under no circumstances will it be held responsible for late delivery or loss of the documents so mailed.

| 6. | Application for pre-qualification should be submitted in sealed envelopes, delivered to the address below by June 29, 2001 and be clearly marked " Application to pre-qualify for the construction contract package TNRSP 01 of Tamil Nadu Road Sector Project".
